WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This training is not just for PIOs!  All public safety officers (police, fire, EMA) who serve in a supervisory capacity or who have contact with the media will benefit from this training. This includes Chiefs, deputy chiefs, Sheriffs and undersheriffs, EMA managers, captains, lieutenants, sergeants, watch commanders, shift supervisors, on-scene incident commanders, and detectives, as well as public information officers.  (Municipal managers and department heads and school administrators will also benefit significantly from this training.)

 
ABOUT THE TRAINING:

You can win with the news media; this training shows you how.  (If your Crisis Preparedness Plan doesn’t take the media into account, you’re not ready!)  You will learn how to deal with reporters under all circumstances, from routine day-to-day inquiries to a full-blown major crisis incident.  This is practical training, not theoretical; take what you learn and put it to work for you on the street, right away.  Topics include: “feeding the animals” and their 3 main food groups; mandatory media relations Do’s and Don’ts; effective interview techniques; strategies for cleaning up a public relations mess; media management in a crisis; defending against media assault, media battery and media brutality; the professional news conference; essentials of a good news release; and much, much more.  Students get an in-depth, inside look at how and why the media
